Mr. Balram In Blue Shirt in DPO meeting
About Balram: Balram is a resident of Dhamnai village lives with his parents in the village, belongs to the tribal community, is a person with locomotor disability & faces problems in walking.
SVJ in action: When Sammalit Vikas Jankari staffs reached Balram he shared his ups and downs to them. They motivated him to support other PWDs of his village and form a PWDs’ group. He agreed on this and started gathering PWDs for meetings & joined Block level DPO. Gradually, he got the tricycle in a camp.
Construction of accessible Toilet: As Mr Balram continued with the DPO once DPO members informed him about construction of toilets under Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan. He discussed about it with Sarpanch of his village and also with CBR Coordinator Mr Sachin Patidar. Mr Sachin discussed the matter with Sarpanch as well as NGO officials and Govt officials who are working on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to make accessible toilet for Mr Balram which would be a model for the whole district.
With the efforts of SVJ team and the support of ISRD, Water Aid, Janpad Panchayat Barwani and Gram Panchayat accessible toilet under Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan was constructed for Mr Balram.
Budget: Budget allocated by Government under Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan is Rs 12000.
Total expense in construction is Rs 19000.
Accessible toilet: A regular toilet under Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan is made with Rs 12000 which is 4*4 feet but not accessible for a person with disability as the person can’t enter with his wheelchair. Also the wall of this is 4 inches on which we can’t put basin or handrails.
In accessible toilets, walls are of 8 inches which are strong enough for handrails and washbasin. Inside area of the toilet is with sufficient space to enter with wheelchair. Also washbasin is made inside the toilet to wash hands. Ramp is also there with railings and the water tank to store water.
Process to cover the budget: As Person got Rs 12000 from Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan, we were in need of another Rs 7000 to construct the accessible toilet. In discussion with Sarpanch and others we decided to take contribution and complete the construction. Different members from the community along with the sarpanch provided support to construct the toilet. Expertise is provided by SVJ team.
With the contribution of the community the toilet is constructed and set as a Model for the District.
